Hard disk drives (or HDD’s), known simply as ‘hard drives’, used to be the only type of computer storage available to everyday users. Since the introduction of solid state drives (or SSD’s) however, consumers now have a choice.
There are advantages and disadvantages of each. In terms of capacity hard drives have the edge, with up to 4TB of storage available in comparison to SSD’s where the maximum size on the market is 2TB. When talking about capacity you also need to talk about cost. The average cost of a 500GB hard drive is $50-$100 whereas an entry-level 500GB SSD will set you back over $350.
Here's a summary of the ‘good’ and the ‘not-so-good’ of each option:
HDD
Advantages:
Maturity - hard drive technology has been around for a long time; over the years it’s been perfected and as a result, it’s reliable and doesn’t require any additional software to work with today’s operating systems.
Cost – hard drives are budget-friendly. They cost only around 10c or less per GB.
Capacity – as mentioned above, hard drives are spacious and available in large capacities, up to 4TB.
Disadvantages:
Speed/performance – in comparison to SSD’s the hard drive runs at a snails pace. A fast hard drive can process data at about 200MB per second whereas a fast SSD can do more than double that.
Durability – a hard drive works with a lot of moving parts so if you drop your computer those parts are more likely to either move around or get damaged.
SSD
Advantages:
Speed/performance - SSD’s are the fastest storage option available. Computers containing an SSD will start-up faster, run quicker and simply outperform computers containing a hard drive. A fast SSD will process data at around 550MB per second.
Durability – a solid state drive is just that - solid - it has no moving parts. Drop a computer containing an SSD and you’re less likely to damage it’s data.
Disadvantages:
Cost – because the technology is quite young it’s expensive. Entry level SSD’s cost around 70c per GB and range up to $2 per GB.
Capacity – other than cost, capacity is a major downfall of the SSD. Affordable SSD’s are limited to a capacity of around 256GB, with the maximum available at 2TB.
To put it simply, a modem transfers data between your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and your home or business. The router then takes this data and passes it onto all of the devices in your network, ie, smartphones, tablets, computers.
A modem can only connect a single device (PC or router) to the internet. A router can connect to a number of devices but it needs a modem to be able to connect to the internet.

Modems and routers are available as separate devices or you can purchase one device that does both jobs, called a Modem Router.

When it’s taking a while to do something in Excel have you ever thought ‘I’m sure there’s a much quicker way to do this’ but you don’t know how? Here we’ve put together 5 time-saving tips that we hope will help.
Changing the Enter key behaviour
When you hit the Enter key in Excel you'll automatically drop down to the cell just below it. But what if you want to enter long rows of data rather than columns? By setting your preferences before you start your spreadsheet, you can change this feature and save yourself extra keystrokes.
Go to Excel Options (which you’ll find under the File tab) and select Options. Then, click on Advanced and under Editing options select your choice from the dropdown box.
Display formulas instead of results
A single keystroke lets you switch between Excel's standard display, which shows the result of a formula, to one that shows the actual formulas. Press it once, and Excel displays formulas instead of results. Press it again, and the results appear again. This is handy if you want to check your workings, or you’ve received a spreadsheet from a colleague and want to check theirs.
The keystroke is: Ctrl `
(The ‘open quotes’ key is located on the top left of the keyboard, next to the number 1).
Formatting a table
For a lengthy list of data, creating a table with some basic formatting can improve legibility and functionality and it's simple to do with Excel's Formatting features. The easiest to use is 'Format a Table'.
Highlight the range of cells or rows or columns that you want to format into a table. Go to the Home tab and select Format a Table which will reveal a drop down menu of options. Click on the style and colour that best suits your data and Excel will automatically format that data.
Freeze panes
To keep an area of your spreadsheet visible while you scroll to another area, you can lock specific rows or columns using a function called ‘Freeze Panes’. This is perfect if you need to see row and column headers as you scroll.
First;
• To lock a row, select the row below the row/s that you want to keep visible when you scroll.
• To lock a column, select the column to the right of the column or columns that you want to keep visible when you scroll.
• To lock both a row and column, click the cell below and to the right of the rows and columns that you want to keep visible when you scroll.
Then, once your row or column is highlighted go to the View tab, click the arrow below Freeze Panes and choose the relevant option:
• To lock one row only, click Freeze Top Row.
• To lock one column only, click Freeze First Column.
• To lock more than one row or column, or to lock both rows and columns at the same time, click Freeze Panes.
Entering a series of data
Instead of entering data manually on a spreadsheet, you can use the ‘Auto Fill’ feature to fill cells with data that follows a pattern, or series. For example, if you need to enter the numbers 1 to 20, you can simply enter the number 1 then Auto Fill the following cells with numbers 2 to 20.
Select the cell/s that contains the data that you want to fill into adjacent cells. Then, drag the fill handle across the cells you want to fill. To fill the cells with a series of data, click the Auto Fill Options Button
, and then click the Fill Series option.

Online music streaming is making waves and alongside its rise in popularity there's been an increase in the number of service providers. Music streaming looks set to stay so to help you compare what's out there today we've put together this summary.
Other than price, the main difference between each provider is the structure of the site (how to search, playlists, etc), the level of social interaction and which devices you can play them on. Each has their strengths and weaknesses so it really comes down to personal preference. Most providers offer some sort of free trial period so if you’re not sure if music streaming is for you, you can give it a go with no risk, or if you know you’re keen, you can compare a few service providers before making a commitment.

First it was Apple's iPhone and then Samsung's Galaxy, both phones all but burying the once extremely popular BlackBerry. Some people were so obsessed with their BlackBerry's that the term 'CrackBerry' was coined. So the fact that BlackBerry nearly disappeared entirely shows how quickly trends can change.
BlackBerry will be hoping that those trends swing in their favour with the launch of their new BlackBerry 10 operating system and one of the first handsets available on that platform - the BlackBerry Z10. It's loaded with features and, according the BlackBerry, the highlights are:
BlackBerry Hub
The Hub is where you keep all of the most important things on your phone, the stuff you use regularly. What’s great about the BlackBerry Z10 is that you can check out your Hub without closing what you’re already looking at. You simply slide your thumb from the edge of the display to take a ‘peek’ at your Hub. From there you can either slide the screen back or click on something in the Hub that you might need to respond to.
Time Shift
Create the perfect picture even if it didn’t really happen. The BlackBerry Z10’s camera uses fancy technology that they’ve called ‘Time Shift’ to capture the moments before and after a shot, allowing you to scroll through it all to select and combine the best moments. So, if someone is blinking in the shot you took you can go back to the moment before they blinked and include that facial expression instead. Voila, no blinking, no awkward smiles, no taking multiple shots to get the ‘perfect’ one. Genius.
Screen Share
Video calling is not a new innovation but ‘Screen Share’ just might be. Screen Share allows you to do just that, share what’s on your phone - photos, a document, a website, messages, even the view through your camera - with the person on the other end of the phone. This feature takes video calling to a whole other level.
Keyboard
BlackBerry was once famous for its handy Qwerty keyboard so it’s no surprise that they’re keen to keep up, and even overshadow, the Joneses in this area. In their own words the touchscreen keyboard ‘learns your writing style and suggests words to help you type faster, more accurately and with the least amount of effort. And if you tend to mistype certain letters, the keyboard will remember and subtly adjust to make sure you hit the right key.’
Interested? Some retailers are already taking pre-orders for the Blackberry Z10 at $749 outright. The handset is available in black or white and is expected to arrive on our shores late March. Learn more about it here.

- You’ll be prompted to enter a name for your new group. You can repeat this step to create as many groups as you like. Click OK . You’ll then be prompted to select which email address you which to reference
- Select ‘ Share Calendar ’ from the home menu.
- Type in the email address of who want to share it with, and select how much detail you want them to see:
- GPS. We’re sure you don’t need to know where you’re going all day every day, so switch this to off, and simply activate it when you need to.
- Bluetooth. Same goes here; only switch this on when you need it.
- Social networking. If you’re permanently logged in - then it’s going to auto update and drain. In the interests of staying cyber safe, you should be logging out when you’re done anyway.
- Email. Same goes here; it’s going to auto update. Of course, if you need it for work – then it’s probably one of the ones you should leave on.
- WiFi/3G. If you don’t really use the internet on your phone, don’t turn off the wifi.
- Interactive apps. If you’re playing a game of Sudoku, then the drain isn’t going to be as high as a game of Words with Friends for example, which is constantly reaching out to a server to keep things up-to-date.
Windows Media Player
Windows user? Then it’s already part of the features of the operating system.
Pros:
- Its already installed on most Windows PCs
- Plays back a number of media formats
- Very easy to use, and of good quality
- Cannot play all media types
- Features are limited, e.g. click to continue pauses
- Compatible with both Macs & PCs
- Very easy to use (if you use iTunes, it will be second nature) and of good quality
- It’s not preinstalled with all operating systems
- Cannot play all media types
- Features are limited, e.g. click to continue pauses
- Requires 512MB of RAM
VLC
Mac or PC user? Then it’s compatible.
Pros:
- Can virtually play any media file you that you give it
- It’s free and will require 21MB of RAM
- No media library tools, but you can still create playlists
- You will need to download it (which you can do so here: http://vlc-media-player.en.softonic.com/)
- Children as young as 8 are exposed to inappropriate materials online which includes:
- being contacted by someone unknown, asking for personal details
- being teased or bullied.
- 2 in 5 children have tried to hide what they do on the internet from their parents.
- An extra layer of security: HTTP with SSL/TLS protocol. Ever noticed that the website address you type in can change if you’re about to view personal information or do some much needed shopping? E.g. the http://www will change to https://www. This means you’ve just been redirected to an extra secure site, with even more encryption than the first.
- A padlock. Look out for this especially if your about to enter in your credit card details anywhere.
Other cloud based applications: If for example you use web based email such as Hotmail, it’s effectively hosted in the cloud and there are millions of encryptions used in the back end to keep your information safe. Before using a web based application, check out their policies on how their data is encrypted and managed.
Your network & internet connection: We’ve always spoken about the importance of ensuring your network and internet connection is secure from pesky prying eyes. Recommendations would be for a professional to set you up to ensure you haven’t missed any thing, but if you’re confident in doing this on your own, remember that the stronger the password the better. To make it as strong as possible, make it a mix of alphanumeric and lower and upper case. Don’t make things easy for hackers! - Button navigation or touch screen: do you want to browse by using a touch screen or press some buttons? Really the only difference is the slightly higher cost of a touch screen.
- Content: you want to make sure that you have a solid and growing selection to choose from. While most eBooks have their own store, you don’t need to use them exclusively. Other options are Borders or Angus & Robertson. Just check that the book you’re about to download is compatible with your eBook Reader.
- Memory and battery life: don’t risk the battery dying just before you get to the peak of your read! While battery life is often sold on number of weeks or months, confirm exactly how many books that’s equivalent too.
- Extra features: these extra features can include: number of greyscale levels (to help make things easier on your eyes), access to email and ability to surf the internet.

- In PowerPoint, go to the Animations tab.
- If you want to animate the way all the content on the slide appears in the same way, then select Animation, and use the images to guide you, but if you want a more customised experience:
- Select Custom Animation. A new Custom Animation column will appear to the right.
- Highlight the text you want to animate, and then select Add Effect. You can then choose from Entrance, Emphasis, Exit, Motion Paths. In this example, we really want the bullet point to make an entrance and specifically Fly In.
- Once you’ve clicked on your selection, it will demonstrate how it will appear. You will also note a number attached to the left of your selected text. This number is used as a reference tool if you want to modify it further.
- To modify it further; play around with each of the modifying options: Start, Direction & Speed. Each time you make a change, it will demonstrate how it will appear.
- Select Slide Show when you’re ready to see it live in action.
- Finally, don’t forget to smile when you’re presenting. It makes all the difference
- Share your files over your local area network (LAN). This will only work if all computers sit on the same network and are configured to talk to each other.
- Then there is the good old fashioned way of using an external device such as a USB stick, or burning to DVD. Not the most advanced solution, but it’s reliable.
- Check out online programs such as DropBox or YouSendIt. They are quick and easy, and you can generally use these for free, but there will be a limit on the file size that you can send. If for example your video file is within the GB range (i.e. more than 1000 megabytes!) then chances are this option is not for free. Simply check out the plans available.
- Programs such as AutoGK will condense your video files for you and allow you to change formats. This will however impact the quality of your video, so do make a backup of the original for your records before you start changing them.
- Type (Black & White, Photo, Full colour, Glossy)
- Resolution (300dpi is a good standard)
- Size (you can customise it to A4, A5, A3 etc)
- Disk erasing tools. There are various ones available online, some free some not. Here is an example: Softpedia/DP Wiper . What to look out for? There are no guarantees and you are really going to be doing this on your own.
- Have it professionally wiped and have the operating system reinstalled (you don’t have to reinstall the system provided the person your are selling or donating it to, is fully aware that it won’t include the operating system).
- Your ‘My Documents’ folder
- Temporary Internet files and Cookies (In Internet Explorer for example, top right you’ll find these icon’s: ), click > wheel > browsing history. Check the ‘Delete browsing history on exit’ and set history to ‘0’.
- Any other folders you’ve set up on various drives?
- Email – file extensions include .dbx, .eml or .pst (be sure to also delete the account settings and passwords).
- Your User Profile > User Accounts in the Control Panel.
- As a final sanity check: just like posting something online, if you’re happy for a complete stranger to view the info you have then don’t be surprised if one day that could potentially happen if you haven’t taken any precautionary steps.
