A guide to buying tech online

With a strong Aussie dollar and gift season upon us, many of us are turning to online stores to buy our tech. While it will save you money in the short term, there are some things to consider before hitting 'proceed' on that credit card transaction.

  • How thorough is your research? Are you certain that the product/s you are purchasing is the right one for your home environment? Sometimes a set of expert eyes to give your home a once over and discuss your actual needs will go along way. The online store can’t see inside your house, what else you already  have or haven’t got.
  • Even though you’re on an Australian site, check if what you’re buying is an Australian model, or an imported international one meaning they’re not built to suit the Australian environment.

    Consider:
    • Australia uses 240v power source, anything different will only result in it blowing up.
    • Does it come with a universal adaptor?
    • What language is the operating system? Ok, so you’ve always wanted to learn Spanish, but this probably isn’t the time to start learning another language. Even if you are fluent in Spanish, if you run into computer problems – it will be difficult to find support for a non-English machine.
    • Even peripherals might not talk the same language. As an example, several of our customers have been caught out buying keyboards from the UK, only to find that several of the keys are actually in different locations! Can make things that extra bit harder!
  • Are you buying from a reputable online store? Check out their returns and warranty policy. If it’s an international model, there is a good change that even the Australian operator won’t provide local support.
  • And of course, if you’ve checked into all of the above and you’re happy to proceed – is the transactions page secure? Look for the padlock and/or a green tool bar (any other colour – stop right there).

Safe shopping!
