Are you getting the most out of your router?

A wireless router nowadays is standard in any home. Without one, there’s no enjoying what the digital world has to offer.

What you may not know is that there are actually 2 types of routers and the router you have may be preventing you from maximising your online experience.

The 2 types of wireless routers are a 'G' router or an 'N' router. Not sure which one you have? Simply flip over your router and view the model number. If it doesn’t contain an N, you’ve still got a G router. But which one is right for you?

If you simply like to browse the internet and check your email, then a G router is all you need. If however, you do these things and more - such as stream videos, watch movies saved to your computer on your TV, or play (or have kids that play) Xbox or PlayStation games online – then you could do with an upgrade to an N router.

An N router will enable faster speeds (a G router provides only 54Mbps vs. a standard N router which will typically provide at least 150Mbps) as well as provide an increased signal range. Oh, in case you’re wondering Mbps means megabits per second.

If you do need to upgrade to an N router, you can go that one step further with a 'Dual Band' N router. Dual Band means your router will operate on 2 different frequencies, meaning less interference from other household gadgets such as a cordless phone. Dual Band or not, an N router will provide you with increased internet speed and much better range. This type of router is perfect if you're in a heavily congested area or have multiple wireless items in your home.
