The ‘Conficker Worm’ – still here and causing trouble

memory-chip image

Back in November 2008, we reported that the Conficker Worm was spreading rapidly across the internet. Despite the formation of a 'Conficker Working Group'  (formed to try and defeat the worm), since then over 5 million computers have been infected. Today the worm continues to pose one of the largest threats to your computer today and, unfortunately for home users, the problem is not limited solely to businesses.

For the home user, the worm is concerning as it can make your computer vulnerable to further infections, cause your machine to send spam emails or cause you to be the target of offers attempting to con you into buying fake anti-virus software. It also spreads easily between computers connected to home networks and infects other machines switched on.

You needn't be at risk and protecting yourself is simple. Take the time now to:

1. Install the latest Microsoft Updates (we recommend you use automatic updates) and;
2. Install, update and run a full scan using reputable Internet security software

As always, if you’re concerned you might be at risk or would like some assistance protecting your computer give us a call on 1300 275 449.
