Correcting the AutoCorrect feature in Microsoft Word 2007.

While some people love AutoCorrect others prefer to proof read the old fashion way. If you've reached a stage in your relationship with AutoCorrect where you're ready to throw in the towel, follow the steps below in Word 2007 to turn off AutoCorrect.

  1. Click on the Microsoft office button (the big globe) in the top left corner and then click on Word Options
  2. Left click Proofing then select AutoCorrect options from the pane that appears on the right hand side. Un-tick all of the boxes you see in the pane that comes up and click ok to save. Also look under the AutoFormat tab to remove any other settings that you find annoying.

Stop Word from ruining your spelling

Sometimes, especially where surnames are concerned, Word autocorrects spelling that it thinks is incorrect. To fix this, you need to add your specific word to the dictionary.

To do this, type your word, as it should appear then, before pressing space or enter, right click it and click Add to dictionary. This tells Word that it's ok to leave the word as it is

Stop Word from capitalising your words

Some words are supposed to be kept in lower case. For example, the brand name "gizmo" should always be spelt in lower case so that it matches the logo. Now if you were to start a sentence with the word "gizmo" it would automatically get capitalised to become "Gizmo". To stop this from happening:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office button then click Word Options
  2. Left click Proofing then select AutoCorrect options from the pane that appears on the right hand side.
  3. Click the button for AutoCorrect Options
  4. Click the Exceptions button and in the window that appears type the word you don't want corrected - in our case "gizmo" - and press Add then Ok. The next time you type it at the start of a sentence it won't be modified.
