Social Bookmarking, delicious and more…

memory-chip image

Most people these days use at least two computers. One sits at work and another at home. Delicious.com (www.delicious.com - formerly del.ico.us) aims to solve the problem of keeping your bookmarks of interesting sites in a single online repository. It also makes the process of bookmarking your pages much more complete by suggesting tags for the pages you’re bookmarking based on what other people have already used.

Why bother?

By signing up for delicious and installing the Firefox add-on, you’re able to quickly store and access your bookmarks across multiple computers. Say for example that you are browsing the net at work and find a site you really want to show your family when you get home. Using delicious all you would need to do is press CTRL+D (the shortcut key for bookmarking across all browsers) and the bookmark is uploaded and saved to your delicious account. When you get home that night, all you’d need to do is to open the delicious bookmarks bar and you’d have the page ready to show.

And what is social bookmarking?

The most popular sites on the web are seen by millions of people each day. Social bookmarking works on the fact that more people will bookmark the best sites and therefore those sites will float to the top. They will also tag the best bookmarks with the topics that the fall under category so they can find them later.

Social bookmarking using delicious is a great way to find the most interesting links on any topic as they have already been pre-vetted by other people around the world.

How do I get started?

Simple.

  1. Go to www.delicious.com and sign up for an account
  2. Export your current bookmarks from your browser and then import them into delicious (make sure to denote if you want them to be private or not) – this is usually taken care of as part of the set up process.
  3. Install the delicious bookmarking add-on to your browser (IE or Firefox). Adds-Ons can be downloaded here http://delicious.com/help/tools
  4. The next time you find a link you want to add, press CTRL+D to bookmark it and it will automatically be uploaded to delicious.
  5. Any bookmarks uploaded to delicious will be available from any of your computers.
