Interesting social media statistics, as we launch with our own Facebook and Twitter pages.

Social media is now a way of life for most people and its fast becoming a way of communication for businesses. This month gizmo launches its Twitter and Facebook pages so we've decided to take a look at some interesting stats on five of the best-known social media forums - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and blogging.

The Facebook press office provides some interesting stats:

  • the average Facebook user has 130 friends
  • more than 150 million people engage with Facebook every month
  • people spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook

In terms of Twitter – stats are similarly interesting:

  • twitter gets more than 300,000 new users every day
  • twitter started as a simple SMS-text service
  • over 60% of Twitter use is outside the US

LinkedIn is the oldest of the sites and its stats include:

  • more than 70 million users worldwide
  • 80% of companies use LinkedIn as a recruitment tool
  • executives from all Fortune 500 companies are on LinkedIn

YouTube is a creative way for GenY to showcase content – stats include:

  • the first video was uploaded in April 2005 and by June 2006, more than 65,000 videos were being uploaded every day
  • YouTube receives more than 2 billion viewers per day
  • every minute, 24 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube.

Finally, blogging has become an innovative way to get a discussion going in a public forum:

  • 77% of Internet users read blogs
  • 60% of bloggers are between the ages 18-44
  • corporate blogging accounts for 14% of blogs.

So if you think that social media is a fad; a phase that GenY is going through then think again! As the above stats show even corporates are now wising up to the effective and cut through use of social media.
