Streaming music

Have you walked into your friends' house and watched what appeared to be them making a phone call to then hear the tunes pumping around you? You've just experienced the wireless joys of streaming music. You to can do this too and there are a couple of different ways you can:

  • If you’re a dedicated iTunes user and have an iPod or iPhone, then AirPlay would be right for you.

AirPlay will give you the connection to wirelessly stream your music to any stereo equipment in your house.

Your speakers must be AirPlay compatible (companies such a Sony, Pioneer, Philips Bowers & Wilkins and Denon have compatible speakers). Simply call your current manufacturer to find out, but chances are if it’s a few months old, they won’t be compatible.

If your speakers are not compatible, then you’ll need AirPort Express which plugs into an electrical outlet near the speakers, and is connected via cable.

Then simply use your iPod or iPhone to control your iTunes library from anywhere in the house! Look for the ‘Remote’ App which is free at the App Store.
  • If you like to listen to a combination of old ripped CD’s, or via iTunes or any other service based download, there are some neat alternatives which provide both a stereo and the streaming software. Here’s a couple we like:

    • Sonos wireless HiFi systems (www.sonos.com.au) - great sound quality, wireless set up, can stream music from your iTunes, internet radio stations, podcasts, your ripped CDs – and can be controlled with your mobile device or tablet.
    • Logitech Squeezebox  (http://www.logitech.com/en-au/speakers-audio/wireless-music-systems/devices/5745) – Unlike the Sonos which can use your mobile device or tablet, the Squeezebox uses it’s own colour touch screen device to control what you want to play and where.

With any of these solutions, before you make the investment, it is worth having a professional around to your home to assess what you already have and provide a solution that would be best for you.
