Switching to Digital TV

You may have started to see the ads on TV and in the newspapers where over the next 3 years, the Australian Government is planning to phase out the analogue television signal. This means that every household will need to switch over before the analogue signal is switched off or face a future with no television. So why is the government moving to digital and how do you make the switch?

Digital television, other than being the wave of the future, means a few excellent things: better picture and sound, access to radio broadcasts and loads more channels to watch. There are already 8 additional channels to those you can view on analogue signal, and this will range will only get better.

There are three options when considering making the switch to digital TV.

The first is to get a set top box which will receive and convert the digital signal to one that your analogue TV can display. This is the cheapest method, but it means you won’t be able to view some of the channels in high-definition.

The second is to replace your TV with one that has a digital tuner built in. Although more expensive, this option will provide you with a new, high-definition TV which will not only look better, but will get you all the stunning high-definition channels available on digital TV.

The third is to get a digital video recorder (DVR) which is a set top box with recording functionality, often referred to as a PVR (personal video recorder).
