Question from the field – Software to speed up my computer

Dear Gizmo,

I recently came across this page which says it offers software which will speed up my computer. I’ve heard of friends being burnt before so I wanted to ask what your opinion was before I downloaded any of these.

Chris, Oxley

Hi Chris,

Our view is to ‘proceed with caution’ with these tools.

While many of them are useful, more often than not they do more harm than good, especially if you’re not sure what you are asking them to do. Basically they try to tweak low level system settings in the Windows Registry (sometimes settings which aren’t supposed to be changed). Although you might be frustrated with the speed of your operating system, Microsoft has done a huge amount of testing to ensure that Windows is as fast as it can be with the safest settings.

Many of the tools out there are simply trying to get money from unaware customers who are frustrated that their PC isn’t running as fast as they expect (most often because it’s been loaded with too much ‘junk’). The sure-fire way to make your computer run faster is to add memory (RAM), upgrade your processor, defragment your hard disk, uninstall unnecessary applications or, if you’re still not happy, buy a new computer.
