Understanding the NBN |
The Government’s NBN (National Broadband Network), has commenced rolling-out to various locations across this very fine country of ours. We summarise what it all means, why is it needed and when can you get it. |
What it meansAccording to NBN Co Ltd who designed, built and will operate the NBN , the average monthly downloaded on a fixed broadband connection is approx 9.2GB, and is predicted to grow around 50% each year. Download speeds have also increased significantly and will continue to do so. So for Australia to remain technologically competitive and keep up with the rest of the world, it needs to ensure every Australian will have access to super fast internet access. It's luke warm fast at the moment. This super fast access will be achieved via fibre optic cable technology (approx. 93% of households will have this access) and, wireless and satellite technologies for the rest of us. Why you need it For the most of us, this means an array of continuous and uninterrupted entertainment at home. This will allow you to simultaneously browse the net, stream movies and other applications all without having to wait for your broadband to kick in. How to get itRolling it all out won’t happen instantly and it will take another few years until every Australian will have access. But the roll out has started and you can check out where here: http://www.nbnco.com.au/our-network/maps.html If you’re in the roll out area there will already be plans available, so check with your local retail service provider. These plans differ greatly, so do shop around for what will suit you best. And, if you need a little help getting the right gear to help you maximise the super fast internet access, our gizmotechs can help with any computer support you need.
