Using the auto-archive featureDear Gizmo, I’m curious. Every now and again when I turn on my email it pops up a message saying that it would like to “auto-archive” my emails. What does this mean and where do my emails go when this happens? Jane, Perth |

Dear Jane Thanks for the question. Auto archiving is a way in which your email program maintains itself so that your working collection of emails doesn’t get too large (and slow down performance). By allowing your email program to auto-archive your older messages you keep your inbox performing at top speed. If you allow your email program to auto-archive it will apply some default rules to your inbox which determine which messages are due to be shipped off to the stacks and which are allowed to hang around. Usually nothing under 30 days old is moved but you can change these settings usually by clicking on Tools > Options/Preferences. It’s important to remember that auto-archiving doesn’t delete your email - it just moves it to a storage folder that is separate from your working inbox. If you use Microsoft Outlook for your emails, auto-archiving will create a separate folder in your messages pane called “archives”. This new archives folder will duplicate all the files and folders in your normal mailbox and you can still access it as if it was like any other email folder. Give us a call if you want a hand modifying your auto-archive settings or use the help feature in your email program to work out how to turn off or modify your auto-archive settings. Regards, |
