Utilising WiFi on your 3G smartphone |
You've got a smartphone and a data plan. You're now ready to make full use of the internet when you're out about. Depending on the data plan you're on, you'll need to be careful that you don't overdo it and potentially incur additional charges if you surf a little too much, download too many Apps etc. The best way to ensure this doesn't happen is to make full use of the WiFi that is available around you instead of your 3G data plan. |

While at home for example, let your smartphone automatically switch to use your home WiFi (the signal will also be faster and stronger, giving you better connectivity). When your on the move, see what ‘hotspots’ are available. A hotspot is an area where WiFi access is available. If you want to be notified when you’re in a hotspot area (for an iPhone); go to Settings> WiFi> and then ensure ‘Ask to Join Networks’ is switched to On. Then when a hotspot is available, you’ll notice next to the hotspot name e.g. Bob’s Place, that there will either be a padlock, or not. If there is a padlock, you won’t be able to access the hotspot without authentication i.e. passwords. If there’s no padlock... the internet is yours to use. If you want to walk into your home and have your phone automatically switch to WiFi (for an iPhone): go to Settings > General > Network > Wifi > and then enter all your home network details including passwords. If you don’t know them, a quick call to your data plan provider will help you out. Do make sure you spell the details correctly though! Once you’ve done this, it will automatically pick up the WiFi signal when you walk into your house without your smartphone having to prompt you. At any time, you can see whether you’re using WiFi or 3G on the top of your phones screen. Have more questions or need help? Contact Gizmo on
