NakedDSL (or Naked ADSL2+ or Naked ADSL)

So what is Naked about NakedDSL?

Whether the name comes from some marketing concoction designed to get you interested, or has some deeper technical meaning, the ‘naked’ part of Naked DSL plans refers to the fact that naked plans allow you to have an internet connection through a copper phone line without also needing to pay for the phone line rental normally required. Indeed, part of the connection process for a Naked DSL plan is that your regular phone line is disconnected.

Why would I want one?

Naked DSL plans are a good idea if you have absolutely no use for a home phone line and can do with saving a few more extra dollars per month by not having to pay for your home phone rental. Given that most of us these days have pretty good mobile phone cap plans we use for the majority of our calls, it might not be an issue for you not to have a home phone. If you use your home phone for long distance phone calls, check out our article about Skype and how it can slash the price of long distance phone calls.

All of this is important as you won’t be able to use your home phone at all once NakedDSL is connected, so obviously, you’ll need to have a mobile phone.

What should I factor in before making a choice?

  • How much does your ISP charge for a normal connection per month
  • How much would a NakedDSL connection cost
  • How much of a premium does this mean your ISP places on NakedDSL connections?
  • Whether or not your your home alarm requires a home phone line to work

Either way you go, you will need a working phone line to get NakedDSL set up, so keep initial connection costs in mind.
